Fusion will make electricity affordable for the two billion who don’t have it now. The trend seems to be as prosperity increases, population growth rate decreases. Fossil fuels will be less important, and can be used cleanly and efficiently. I really don’t see any down side. The trajectory of human history is one of progress as energy becomes cheaper and more abundant. The so called “malthusians” have always been wrong, but they never give up.

Socialists like to portray Malthusian thinking as being pessimistic and faulty. Yet, the rapid increase in global population after the discovery of coal and oil clearly shows that populations do increase after advances in technology and resource supply. The limitation of population growth in advanced societies is due mostly to educational aspirations of the females that attend university and have less time to reproduce then do third world country females. The acquisition of luxury consumer items may also limit and stymie the size of first world families. Thus, they spend more money and time on luxury items and less time and money on their offspring.

I do expect population to grow rapidly after the next industrial revolution is achieved trough clean cheap and plentiful fusion energy. However it will not necessary happen on Earth as unlimited clean energy will transform the economy, provide the necessary resources and enable the manufacture, support and population of extra-terrestrial colonies.

Akhenaten: Malthusians have been and will always be totally wrong. It’s not a question of population increasing, but of that increase outstripping resources. In reality, as population increases, living standards, life expectancies, etc., constantly improve. Chuctanunda: I know that we have been lucky so far and have managed to avoid a huge population starvation catastrophe on a global scale. But, eventually this is going to happen. Its not a matter of “if it will happen”, its just a matter of “when it will happen”. The planet is hopelessly overstocked with humans and resources are fast running out. One of the major resources will soon run out I am sure. This will result in wars which will be the beginning of the end for humans. The next big world war should cause the death of 98% of all humans. Even if we do manage to create a new form of fusion energy, other resources like fertilizer will run out fairly soon anyway. Thus, this new form of energy will do us no good.

Note – Life expectancy depends 99% on diet. It has nothing to do with population size.

Akhenaten: What you’re saying has been wrong every time it’s tried, and for good reason. Resource abundance is completely a resulting factor of technology. Now days technology is actually accelerating, i.e., Moore’s Law. Check out Robert Zubrin with Stefan Molyneux on YouTube. They do a tremendous interview on this whole subject of Malthusian doom and gloom prognostication. And Zubrin has a book “Merchants of Venom” where he goes into a lot of detail, and sources his information. BTW life expectancy is suppose to decrease, as well as food supply, as population increases, according to Malthus and company.

Well, I had a look at Stefan Molyneux’s video on the Zika Virus because I am an expert on viruses. [Note – Viruses don’t exist! lol.] Stefan claims that the banning of DDT is the cause of the re-emergence of many African viruses. lol. Well, that’s the exact opposite of the truth of this matter. It’s the DDT and other pharmaceutical chemicals that are the cause of these so called ‘viruses’ in the first place. He failed to record the more important information of WHEN and WHERE DDT was used before the viral outbreaks occurred. He needs to use historical graphs in his presentations. See Vaccination Liberation Website for graphs and timelines which clearly shows that DDT spraying PRECEDES disease outbreaks like Polio, Ebola and Zika virus.

His book “Merchants of Despair”, that he overviews in the interview, is very scholarly and doesn’t contain major errors like you suggest. Further, it is well known and not even in dispute that tens of millions of people, mostly children, died in third world countries due to the overblown concern of environmental harm, especially to birds, from DDT use. Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” was the rallying cry for this insane hysteria. Beyond that, DDT is a simple chemical. Viruses are complex genetic invaders. It’s impossible for DDT to have any causal connection to these complex biological organisms. And I just checked your link. There’s nothing there about DDT, which is a pesticide used to kill mosquitoes, intending to prevent malaria. More importantly, the major premise here is the doom and gloom fallacy of Malthus and his modern day descendants in radical environmentalism, and the long trajectory of historical record of ever increasing resource abundance from advances in technology.

Again I refer you to the great effort of Dr. Zubrin, both on YouTube, and more comprehensively in his book, “Merchants of Venom”. The main point being technological advances, especially in the all critical area of cheap abundant energy, have allowed a human population to continuously expand while human living standards expand simultaneously. Focus Fusion holds the great promise, perhaps in less than ten years, of being a giant leap forward in human living standards and quality of life. And as an aside, if I may be permitted, Dr. Zubrin’s greatest claim to fame is in his advocacy for and direct research and development of the human Mars mission. Besides cheap abundant energy here on earth, Focus Fusion may well be a viable energy source for a Mars mission. It may be possible with Focus Fusion to reduce the flight time of such a mission from the current six months with chemical rockets, to less than a month. You have falsely assumed that the human race will progress forever without any checks or balances occurring in our rapid population expansion. The Western countries have used slave labour from 3rd world countries to produce the bulk of their luxury items. This parasitic existence can’t continue forever and their will be a price to pay soon. The ruling classes must ignore all the warning signs of imminent disaster because the industrial machine must appear to be invincible and forward moving. Thus, books like “Merchants of Venom” will be hailed of prophetic masterpieces.
