However, this method of antimatter assisted nuclear fusion may not be workable or compatible with the FF device. It may be more compatible with laser implosion fuel pellet type of fusion method. But it seems very wasteful, extravagant and expensive to try and coat heavy hydrogen pellets with that much gold. So for now at least, this remains another one of my half – baked ” out – of – the – box ” ideas for fusion …… at least until some as yet unforseen breakthrough works the bugs out of this particular approach.
But then again, the opinion expressed by lerner and myself may be wrong. When considering the diabolical immagination and ingenuity of rogue terror regimes and dictatorships these days, you could probably even figure out how to eventually make a deadly terror weapon out of a tube of aquafresh toothpaste, a pencil eraser, just about anything ! ! ! As long as we have so many nutcase dictatorships and radical fanatics screaming ” allah akbar ! ! ! ” even the most safe things may not be safe ! ! !
Politics, politics, politics …… both radical right – wing conservative and radical left – wing liberal …… how depressing :-S Is’nt all this talk about political smear campaigns, Obama and extremist nutcase types getting a little off the main subject ?
I agree with Lerner that while anything is possible, it seems very unlikely due to the very problematic nature of trying to utilize the FF for this purpose. With the complexity and high cost involved, a regular nuclear fission plant would probably suffice just as well or better than this circuitous route.
Ok, so I admit I’m on an endless roll of antimatter posting here ! ! !
But I just decided that I would also like to mention one more thing. According to Charles Cagle of Singularity Technologies, the hydrogen bomb does not really work by hot fusion quite so much as originally believed. The H – Bomb worked so well until it blinded physicists as to how it really works, according to Cagle. His own theory is that the highly energetic gamma rays emitted from the plutonium fission detonation causes space – time in the near vicinity of an energetic gamma ray to shrink. This slowing down of the rate of time by an energetic gamma ray weakens the electrostatic coulomb charge enough for two nuclei to come into close enough proximity to each other. In other words, the gamma ray is the real catalyst for neutralizing the repulsive coulomb charge, not the high temperature. At least according to the thermonuclear theory put forth by Cagle.
Now just substitute intense gamma rays from laser induced antimatter in place of the plutonium fission gamma rays and you get a basic idea of what might be possible. In other words, a highly energetic gamma ray might be a nuclear fusion catalyst without it necessarily having to be first converted into thermal energy.
Problem is, to make fusion this way you would have to somehow efficiently convert the gamma ray energy into thermal energy. Otherwise, most of the highly penetrating gamma rays would just zip right out of the nuclear fuel and travel a zillion miles before ever being absorbed by something.
I just got finished reading the Science Daily article. Very fascinating indeed (as science officer Pointy Ears would always say as his most famous saying while cruising with Kirk and Scott at warp speed).
Which raises still yet another possibility for laser fusion ? If laser induced antimatter production causes enough antimatter to react with normal matter, could the energy release be enough to heat and compress a thermonuclear fuel enough to ignite ? Hmmm …… very intrigueing possibilities ?
It would indeed be the most dense energy storage medium. About the only other thing I know of that might come close to that kind of density is nuclear isomers.
So far Jimmy T is correct in that antimatter is more of an energy currency than an actual energy source. To produce even the smallest microscopic quantities by today’s methods is far too energy intensive. You have to use a tremendous amount of energy to accelerate a conventional proton close to the speed of light before striking a target. When it does, all that energy used to drive the accelerator and cause the proton to become more massive is enough to create another whole entire proton …… the anti – reversed mirror image of it, that is.
But if somebody has found a more energy efficient way to convert conventional matter, I would really love to hear about it. That would really be an exciting breakthrough ! ! !
There may be one major problem :
Lerner’s statement :
” But once the network is built, you would cut way down or even eliminate planes “
Big business and entrenched interests (major airlines) will fight to kill this any way they can. This is why Los Angeles and many other cities of the United States have such a pathetic, wasteful transportation infrastructure.
There are several companies currently working on commercial designs for recycling. Just google the name Startech into your google search. There is also a company over in Israel, too. But can’t remember the name of it.
The Startech method is not quite up to separation of individual atoms according to their elements, however. But it does produce synthesis gas (CO and H2) for making renewable fuels from trash and also an obsidian glass – like material that can be used for construction or making an asphalt road pavement with superior qualities.
In the future, the focus fusion powerplant may be able to create an unlimited amount of steel, aluminum, ultra – pure silicon and other resources from ordinary rocks, sand and dirt. Forests of trees could be saved if future houses and buildings are made from steel and aluminum instead of wood. Steel on the inside would give the dwellings structural strength. Aluminum on the outside would last virtually forever and not rust. The ultra – pure silicon could produce unlimited cheap photovoltaic solar panels as well as strong structural strength for construction also …… because silicon can be just as strong and sometimes stronger than steel. The leftover chemical element oxygen could be vented into the atmosphere.
And of course, when recycling any garbage that contains the two elements carbon and hydrogen : divert it into a separate catalytic chamber for renewable hydrocarbon production.
It has been a longstanding rule/law of economics in mining and extraction that small trace amounts of things not deemed economic to extract alone by themselves become more economic if extracted along with other things that are economic. Because the larger volume of valuable iron, aluminum and silicon could pay for it all …… you could in theory more economically extract even the smallest trace quantities of gold, silver, zinc, cobalt, copper, rubidium, irridium, tantalum, and etc. So that when it comes to scarce resources and valuable trace metals, you could have the entire planet to feast upon ! ! !
The thermonuclear plasma torch is not a new idea by any means. The idea was concieved way back during the 1950’s and 60’s. Their idea then was to use the doughnut – shaped tokamak. However, I would use a different approach. Instead of the magnetic tokamak serving a dual role of both fusion power and element separation, I would have a tokamak magnetic plasma containment device designed specifically for element separation only…… instead of it being the powerplant. Like a giant resource production garbage disposal made specifically for the task. The power supply to drive the whole thing would instead come from a focus fusion plant ( or several of them) connected externally up to the tokamak plasma reduction chamber. The FF would externally power the whole tokamak recycler.
Laser beams, electron beams, electrically charged and accelerated atoms, even highly focused ultrasound …… could all be driling and tunneling tools powered by focus fusion for underground construction.
Might be getting a little off the subject of offshore FFs that synthesize methanol for fuel cell cars, but I love the cracked eggshell of cracked – up chicken humor ! ! ! 🙂
When thinking outside the box on all the ways to possibly improve the focus fusion device to make it work better, it seems a daunting challenge, because most ideas simply don’t ” pan – out “. When it comes to electrodes that can handle more amperage, scientists are still having a hard time finding a room temperature superconductor, much less a super hot superconductor. As for myself, I keep toying around with the idea of some kind of supplemental fuel additive to the hydroborane that might help to ” kick – start” p+B11 reaction at a lower temperature and pressure. But this idea seems to be running out of workable options also. BUT NEVER QUIT TRYING ! ! ! These very daunting challenges make science and physics all the more fun to try and solve.
I left a short message about focus fusion in the Obama – Biden forums website. I mentioned the fact that it has the potential for unlimited nuclear power with even less waste than a thorium reactor. But I don’t know if Barack Obama or one of his associates will read it and pass the word on to him or not. I have also noticed that others have posted messages about focus fusion on the Obama – Biden site as well. If we keep bombarding them with enough messages about all the superior advantages of focus fusion, maybe eventually somebody in the Obama Administration will listen and take it to heart.
