Just read about the Thor’s hammer experiment:

Not sure if it is still a problem, but seem to solve the switching problem by using a stack of small capacitors (and switches) instead of large ones.
Certainly there would be some R&D costs to develop stacks of those, but that might provide a better control (or not)
