    I was looking at the picture of the tungsten cathode as it was being machined. The article said that it is very brittle and must be frequently heat treated to relieve internal stress. Would there be any benefit to machining the inside of the cylinder to create the 16 vanes and leave the outside of the cylinder in place and not machined away from the vanes? The solid outer surface of the cylinder would give extra support to the vanes and increase the heat flow away from the vanes during operation.
