The UMD team began with a technique known as laser-driven plasma wakefield acceleration and pushed it to the extreme.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if a laser beam interacted with a dpf plasma as it entered the pinch stage. There could be a very intense pulse of light which could be useful for some applications.
