I almost made it entirely out of Microsoft’s orbit recently with Ubuntu 10.10 Linux. Even CS2 runs on the emulator, but alas, DragonSoft barely even starts without Winders up and running. The upside of the story is that Ubuntu’s trusted software includes a lot of killer open-source programs and developer’s toolkits.

These are available at sourceforge.net. Their Freeplane mind-mapping tool and a writer’s notebook called Kabikaboo are fantastic organizational tools, with a very short learning curve.

Kabikaboo has 2 panes, similar to a tabbed 3 ring binder where each set of tabs is under a tab of its own- You develop your tree/ outline in the left pane while writing or importing articles into the right pane. The interface is simple. The only non-intuitive part is the need to click 3 or 4 times to change a tab’s label, but that’s minor. It also has Text and HTML export features.

I highly recommend using this program to sort out all the myriad facets of FF. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everybody!
