If we can get a solution to the coming energy problems, we can fuel a huge increase in our production, which will also bring a lot of wealth to a lot of people who are now on the margins. The mechanisms for this growth are already in place (and have been in place); they are just waiting on something like focus fusion to let it happen. Another reason this is all so important.
