As I mentioned to Dr. Lerner in email…I personally think the project would be best served by investing some coding resources to add support for either ATI (now AMD) or Nvidia gpu-assisted computation. Especially now that both camps can handle double-precision computation in hardware. I’m sure the folding@home folks at Stanford would assist in sharing code and know-how if requested. The amount of floating-point power available in today’s video cards (and, by extension, the purpose-made “stream processing” cards built from them) completely dwarfs what is available on general-purpose cpu’s. IBM’s recent new supercomputing entry (“roadrunner”) uses beefed-up Cell processors in conjunction with AMD cpu’s for the same reason. Just a thought 🙂
