I read about work at Los Alamos with reverse-field trapping. I am not familiar with the exact confinement scheme LPPx uses, but LA got much higher neutron yields with a second axial field trapped inside the pinch. Probably makes timing the two fields + pinch current harder, but might be worth it.
Also, has there been any work done with a pre-ionized fuel charge?
