    Advice from social media dude that can be applied to fusion industry. On the road to fusion, this congratulatory spirit would go along with hearing about big deals and financing people are landing, and breakthroughs on the way. At some point, a mega breakthrough by someone will have to be dealt with by the others. Here are some tips for that.

    3. ABC: Always Be Congratulating — When a peer brags on Twitter about landing a big part or doing a cool show or getting a major Showbiz Deal, always be sure to publicly congratulate them. First of all, it shows everyone that you’re ‘In the Know’ and you ‘Get It’, which are both good for your own brand. Secondly, the person you congratulate might notice your kind gesture, and remember it at some future date when they are in a position to help you out. Even if they don’t brag about their accomplishment (which would suggest that their success is probably just luck as opposed to solid social media strat), but you happen to read about it while scanning the trades, make a big show of congratulating them anyway.

    Again, it projects an image of industry insideryness, but also selflessness and genuine interest in the well-being of others, which together make for a pretty sweet personal Hollywood brand. Even if you don’t like this person, and their good news fills you with anger and frustration over your own lack of similar success, you should Tweet something like “So awesome” or “Wow, really rad” so everyone knows you’re not an insecure, overly-competitive sociopath. In fact, the more you secretly resent them, the more effusive you should make your celebration of their accomplishment. If your nemesis gets a big career-making break, you should say, “HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING!!!!” and keep retweeting/reblogging it across Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Foursquare, and every other social network you’re on until you stop shaking.

    This makes a lot of sense, especially with regard to the several smaller projects like LPP which labor mightily with little notice. A positive attitude here would allow an important spirit of cooperation and some mutual benefit. However, would the same apply to the “money into black hole” projects like NIF and the Tokamak? When the NIF finally gets ignition, the emotion I would be suppressing would sound like “better late than never — and this cost you how much?” I suppose I could suck it up and grin, passing along a “well done” if it would help, but would they even notice?

    May I suggest dry wit, delivered straight faced on YouTube, followed by tweets and other social media posts linking to the video? Since the big boys will definitley use a press release, and big media will copy it, those are the keywords to put into your congratulatory video.

    Yes, the high road is strategically the best path, no matter who crosses energy breakeven line first. But never forget that theoretical breakeven and practical breakeven are not necessarily going to the same project, or even the same fuel group or confinement method. We got us a real horse race, and I’m wondering if the aneutronic gang just might be forcing the others to get with the program.
