The Focus Fusion Society › Forums › Lawrenceville Plasma Physics Experiment (LPPX) › 6th September update: Yield 1/10 of expected @ 1MA, but might be fixed.
“While we need far more data, we have hypothesized a possible theoretical explanation of this data. We believe that the first pulse is created as the filaments of the sheath converge into the pinch and annihilate each other, forming a single filament. The second pulse occurs when the kinks converge to form the plasmoid, and the final one is the heating and compression of the plasmoid itself. If there is insufficient angular momentum, the filaments crash into each other, causing a shock and absorbing much of the energy in the pinch, leaving too little left over for the plasmoid. If there is too much angular momentum, the filaments circle around each other without fully merging. But with just the right amount (the Goldilocks point!), the filaments spiral smoothly into each other, allowing the maximum energy to be transferred to the plasmoid. This would explain the sensitivity of the axial magnetic field adjustment and the lower-than-expected yields. If this hypothesis is valid, we should be able to double the radius of the plasmoids and thus increase their volume and fusion yield by 8-10 fold, through precision adjustment of the axial field. We will be investigating this more in September”
Personal take:
Or it might be effect of turbulance in the process?
Criticism:
This update was available for 4 days, but it was absent from the focusfusion.org main page. I just saw the news when checking Next Big Future blog.

Aaron/Rezwan: This means you need to coordinate the press releases better. 😉
Like:
– Aaron: Send release to stakeholders (stockholders + Rezwan)
– 2(?) days delay
– Rezwan: send release to FFS members (including Aaron as a feedback, so he knows he can publish soon)
– 3 days delay
– Aaron: publish on LPP site (optional)
– Rezwan: publish on FFS site
Or something like it.

Well, it’s something like that. Eric/Aaron sent to stakeholders & me on 7th. One day later, the 8th, I send to FFS paying members. Delay for website is only supposed to be another day, the 9th, but we’re on day 2 now fixing up the graphs to put on the FFS site (FFS usually posts extra info – we have value added). Looks like Next Big Future posted on the 9th.
In the interim, have added a link to the site, and also tweeted it.
Also, I see the report is dated the 6th as that’s when it was written. We had a day turnaround reviewing for typos, etc. But it didn’t go out to investors until the 7th. Still dated the 6th on the LPP website, but that’s like a pre-dated check. Actual posting was later. Don’t be confused.
Note, we want to reduce the turnaround time all around. And we’re about to make an announcement about a few changes that will affect the workflow. Stay tuned!
And my apologies for not being on top of this. I’m preparing for some fundraising/board recruiting meetings and am a bit distracted. Wish me luck!
What do you mean by workflow? Website? Stakeholders? The project workflow itself?
re-read post above, I just edited it.
Lots of workflows. Too much to describe. Will catch you later.
Well, good luck! 🙂
Thanks!

Control it with a computerized PERT chart? 😉 :coolhmm:
I wish you had a simulation for the pinch process – would be so much easier/cheaper to adjust the parameters and find the optimum point.
Did something bad happen? I am marrying tomorrow, I’d like to hear some good news a gift!

The post started with the speculation that the pulse power was being divvied up into 3 bursts, which might be put back together by proper tuning of the magnets, but got off into how the news releases are distributed.
Your marriage statistically should have about a 3-yr. ‘young love’ window, and by that time LPP could be about to begin licensing factories to begin cranking out FoFus. So that should be enough to keep the romance going! 😉

Why, that’s today! Congratulations! Or…maybe not today.
Do you, MTd2, take Tomorrow to be your lawfully wedded…
I am just back from the wedding! 😀 Hmm, I would really like an update!
Aren’t you supposed to be on a honeymoon or something?
I am at my parents’ apartment having a family gathering. But I just cannot stand the noisy talk! They are way are screaming!
