I’m Just a Bill on Capitol Hill

Pro Aneutronic Fusion bill introduced in New Jersey Legislature, thanks to volunteer Derek Shannon.

One reason funding is hard to come by for Focus Fusion is that it defies classification.  Even though it’s neither fission, nor conventional fusion energy, it is placed in the same category as these forms of nuclear energy.  It therefore doesn’t qualify for funding from most alternative energy grant sources.  This New Jersey bill adds two words to change that, at least in the state of New Jersey.

With some lobbying from our volunteer Derek Shannon, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora of New Jersey has introduced a bill into the New Jersey Legislature to add “aneutronic fusion” to types of Class I renewable energies as defined for purposes of “Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act.”  If this bill passes, Focus Fusion will be eligible to apply for state funds! Because fusion is a form of nuclear energy, we had been barred from applying for such funds.

The word “aneutronic” is key here. The fusion process we are developing will use clean fuels (avoiding troubles with tritium) and does not generate neutrons (e.g., does not have the radioactivity problems associated with standard fusion). Many thanks to Focus Fusion Society volunteer Derek Shannon for his lobbying efforts to propose this change to our representatives in New Jersey.
