Focus Fusion 1 ("FoFu") is Born!

"Name the Baby" Contest is over

What baby? Lawrenceville Plasma Physics, Inc. has constructed a dense plasma focus device to test the feasibility of Focus Fusion to produce cheap, clean and inexhaustible energy.

The baby needed a name! So, LPP launched a "name the baby" contest for FFS members and supporters to suggest names. 172 names were submitted. They are listed to the left. Click on the arrows next to each name to see the explanations.

The Baby has been Born! On Oct. 15, 2009, the baby was officially born. The machine had been assembled on October 10, but the official birth is counted by the first shots. This is akin to a baby taking its first breath of air and wailing! With the baby born, the contest is officially over.

So...what's the name? Eric has taken to calling the baby "Focus Fusion 1" - "FoFu" for short. It's conservative, but shortens to be cuddly. Eric likes to say "Fire FoFu!"

Who won? We're all winners, of course! Proud uncles and aunts to this adorable machine. For the purpose of the contest, technically, the closest name entered was FUFE. So, we have to say, there was no technical winner of this contest. Alas, no one will receive a certificate from LPP and a special Focus Fusion gift. Or the direct joy and deep satisfaction of having named the baby.

However, the outpouring of names was inspiring and entertaining. We love all these other great names here, and the various explanations behind them. We'll be keeping these posted because they are all so cool. And because, maybe, when FoFu grows up, she'll want a different name.

(She? Wait, it's mostly green, copper and baby blue. Doesn't that make it a "he"? Then again, aren't all machines "She"?)
