Check out the 9 minute movie on the Electric Grid with Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Nova Science Now.

The grid is “the largest interconnected machine on the planet”.  What a thrill to be connected - part of the machine.  That makes us all cyborgs.

This is a great overview.

One quibble about the clip - it only mentions natural and engineering causes of power outages.  No mention of human mischief.  For that, you’ll need to watch:  Enron:  The Smartest Guys in the Room.

Welll, not available in Canada.  Anyhow, the “Smart Grid” is far from an unmitigated benefit. It has little or no use or payoff for the power consumer, and potentially permits considerable violation of privacy and even interference with personal use choice.

FF, of course, resolves everything by moving source closer to user, and providing a surplus of capacity.
