Gestation

Want more posts on this website? Contribute now!  And also, be patient.  This is a time of gestation.  We are understaffed and underbudgeted.  So we’re working on things that will pay off in the long run.  But immediate gratification will have to wait.  Sorry for the inconvenience!  A couple of things I will mention:

Time of Flight detectors have been set up, both near and far.  Let’s rephrase.  Near Time of Flight Detector and Far Time of Flight Detector have been set up.  This would be easier to explain with pictures.

We got a new camera (John left and took his camera with him), so have resumed with the pictures.  Hours of fun!  Interesting shots of the plates and the effects of the switch problem.  More to take.

Of course, pictures would be more useful if we uploaded them.  What we need is some cheap labor to exploit!  No interns have applied yet, so please stand by.

And, the good news, for me at least, is that I am not irradiated.  Per the monthly dosimeter report, I have ND radiation - not detectable.  The control picked up 13 mrems, and the notification threshold is deep-1250, shallow-125000.  2-4 orders of magnitude.  What a relief.

Yes, those orders of magnitude are a great “buffer factor”! Unless you were in the cell during “shots”, I’d think it would be pretty hard to get zapped.

I don’t know if it’s a relevant technology for uploading to the site, but for temp storage, maybe you could use Opera Unite. It uses your own computer; here are my personal beginner efforts:

Just a matter of jacking in the USB cable to my camera and directing the photos to a specific folder, which I then edit. My “Unite” account points to that. You have to be a “My Opera” member to activate the link, and be online, and then anyone can access the files (if you set them “Public”; a “Password” option also exists).

Ah, you’ve hit the nail on the head.  It’s not about uploading - I have a firewire.  And the upload function on the site is simple.  Oh, and at some point, I can get an eye-fi, and upload as the pictures are being taken.  No, the issue is that I’m not happy with the gallery function of this software.  So, I could either try to expand it (and I did get the “gallery extension module”, but that’s not doing what I wanted, and will take time to figure out).  OR - I was thinking of something like Flikr, which could be integrated.  Or, a new option that you are suggesting.  But do you see what this does?  You’ve just added a new option, and now that slows me down further, because I have to go and evaluate that as well, and weigh it in with the other factors.  Figure out how to use it, how to code it into this site.

And the other issue is a system so the pictures, uploaded, are integrated into appropriate places in the site.  Categories don’t quite work in parallel.  And then there’s gallery css and layout.  And the “LPP experiment” section needs to be organized so that info, uploaded, is easy to navigate and understand.  Intuitive design.

I’d intern for you guys, but I’m pretty useless for that being way down here in Texas! grin

I don’t think “Unite” is worth your time, then. It’s for a local computer, making specific folders accessible to all.  The computer must be left on, etc., at all times. I don’t know how this site is hosted, but I assume it’s a service of the ISP?
