Unfortunately, I feel like the US is closer to Brave New World than one might like—many people are controlled by pleasure or they are deceived, rather than being controlled by pain . . . all this while we are in a constant war and the poor continue to be ignored or exploited by a violent system of control ...

Really?  The SS Act from FDR established ~40 Federal agencies.  The HC Act established ~600. Each determined to grow bigger and live forever.

Guess what and where their living space comes from.
