Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of FusionThe goal of the Focus Fusion Society is to turn the dream of safe, cheap, clean, unlimited energy from nuclear fusion into a practical reality, to do it NOW, and to ensure that this technology is made available to all mankind. And no, it's NOT cold fusion, conventional fusion, or fission. New Study Begun on Limits to Magnetic Field Effect Aug 07, 2007
LPP has begun a new theoretical and simulation study aimed at finding the lowest magnetic field strengths that make the magnetic field effect useful for focus fusion. More realistic plasmoid simulation confirms net energy production Jun 25, 2007
An improved computer simulation of a plasmoid, the dense region where focus fusion energy generation takes place, has confirmed that net energy production is feasible, and in fact has shown higher energy production than previous, less realistic, simulations. LPP Team Starts Looking at Ion-Beam Energy Extraction Mar 31, 2007
Energy from the plasma focus will be delivered in two forms a burst of x-rays and an intense beam of ions. Extracting the energy from the x-ray burst by photoelectric means has been outlined in our patent application and it seems that a high efficiency, around 80%, will be achievable. We have now started to look at the questions related to extracting energy from the ion beam.
Focus Fusion Reported in New York Times Feb 28, 2007
Research in focus fusion gained new public awareness with the publication February 27 of an article on alternative routes to fusion in the New York Times. While the article emphasized sonofusion attempting to produce fusion reactions in bubbles in liquid, it also described other fusion alternatives, including four paragraphs on focus fusion. The section briefly described the plasma focus device, Lawrenceville Plasma Physics’ collaborations and LPP President Eric Lerner’s estimate that a prototype can be developed in six years for about $10 million. The magnetic field effect that can cut energy losses is also mentioned. To read the article online, click here. (free registration is required.)
Water Jul 14, 2006
There are two major ways in which Focus Fusion can affect the planet’s looming water crisis. First, as a source of cheap, virtually unlimited energy it makes hydropower obsolete, liberating many water systems currently trapped behind dams. Second, it will reduce the cost of desalinization dramatically, thus alleviating global water shortages. Of course, switching to fusion and working on these issues will require a complex transition process. More »Distributed Electricity Generation May 30, 2006
An additional benefit of focus fusion is that it can be used for distributed generation. Distributed generation is the idea that electricity should be generated close to where it is used. This has many benefits including reducing the risk of widespread blackouts. The majority of a community’s power could be generated in the community instead of being transmitted hundreds of miles from distant power plants. This would prevent distant equipment failures from affecting the community’s power supply. More »
